Last week, as part of their comprehensive career development programme, our MBA class had the benefit of a workshop from Accenture on interview techniques. Accenture are one of the top global consulting companies and they sent five consultants for an intensive session to put the MBA students through their paces.

The workshop was so good, in fact, that we thought it would be useful to share the top take-aways from the session with you!

1. Poor preparation will lead to poor performance. As a candidate, you need to be informed in as much detail as possible about the company and the job description. But you should also should be clear about your own career goals and why this new position is the next suitable step.

2. Every application process is different! Therefore, you cannot use the same motivation letter for every employer. Swapping company names is not an option! Recruiters will recognise the lack of effort and passion. Quality should be prioritised over quantity.

3. During an interview, your seating posture, facial expression and wording are crucial. In general, it is important to be genuine. You shouldn’t try and present an artificial personality just for the sake of the interview – you will stand out as being insincere. And proper interview practice with a close friend can help a lot to assure that you come across relaxed and confident!

4. Books, websites and case studies can all be good sources of preparation for answering standardised interview questions, but don’t underestimate the importance of a well-written and targeted CV to demonstrate your suitability for a career with the company

Good luck with your applications and we don’t forget that you can see Accenture on campus again at our next recruitment fair!
