I signed up for an evening at the „Genußakademie“ to cook a nice menu while learning a little something about entry opportunities at Deloitte. What I didn’t expect was to be greeted in a very relaxed and personal environment, sip on a refreshing drink out on the sunlit balcony and meet a welcoming delegation from Deloitte. After the little reception, we moved on into the kitchen to cook dinner. I helped prepare the dessert and was able to swap some ideas about client contact and behavior from the viewpoint of both professionals and fellow students while combining ingredients for the sweet highlight of the menu.
Sitting down for dinner, we started with a creamy bear leak-potato soup garnished with sautéed mini tomatoes (which was delicious!). The starter for me was accompanied by an inspiring discussion with Silja Peisker, HR responsible from Deloitte. I was able to learn interesting facts about the recruiting process and understand better the qualities Deloitte is looking for in potential hires.
Following up on the superb starter, we had medium cooked veal prepared with fresh herbs and garden vegetables for our main dish. Again, it was exquisite, as was the conversation I had with Bruce Bässler, Senior Manager, who answered all the questions I had specifically about the consulting business that Deloitte does in the regulatory field. I was happy to receive some first-hand insights about the day-to-day business and also about the counseling program for every employee offered by Deloitte.
As mentioned above, highlight was of course the dessert – rhubarb compote with whipped cream and cookie crumbs – which in the end also won as best course of the night. Over this tasty dish, Ariane Reichert, Manager in the Consulting department, helped me understand better the implications a direct entry position at Deloitte holds. More specifically, we discussed the pro’s and con’s of getting a second master’s degree as opposed to gaining on-the-job experience, and how Deloitte helps employees to further their knowledge with additional workshops and trainings.
Overall, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Especially the ratio of company representatives to students (6/15) helped make the event very insightful for me and left me with many positive impressions about potentially working for Deloitte. I recommend this type of networking event for all FS students who want to get to know Deloitte and to spend a nice evening with classmates (and to learn a little something about making a nice dinner!)
