{"id":4448,"date":"2016-01-06T13:49:15","date_gmt":"2016-01-06T13:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.frankfurt-school.de\/?p=4448"},"modified":"2023-10-05T11:11:08","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T10:11:08","slug":"japan-10-facts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.frankfurt-school.de\/de\/japan-10-facts\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan: 10 astonishing facts you might not know yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being part of the delegation of the student initiative Frankfurt School Model United Nations (FS MUN), which will set out to New York in March 2016 in order to represent the country of Japan on the New York Nations Model United Nations, it has become inevitable to not only get to know Japan but to actually understand where the country and its people come from, and what drives them in present days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Japan is a diverse country; with people who are not too acquainted with the country having at least heard of a relatively conservative culture which has been formed over the course of many centuries, which defines the education, work ethic and general lifestyle &#8211; even today. However, the modern Japanese culture, especially in the last decades, has proven to the rest of the world to be colorful and unorthodox with new, even revolutionary genres in music, art and general pop-culture.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4450\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.frankfurt-school.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/12463532_10207585300086329_337785308_n-460x345-1.jpg\" alt=\"12463532_10207585300086329_337785308_n\" width=\"290\" height=\"217\" \/><br \/>\nThe task in understanding Japan includes comprehending how these two seemingly contradicting perspectives are reconcilable in one country. During the extensive research, the 2016 delegation of the FS MUN has stumbled upon interesting, even surprising facts and figures \u2013 with ten of these listed below:<\/p>\n<p>1. \u201cJapan\u201d in Japanese is either called \u201c<em>Nippon\u201d\u00a0<\/em>or \u201c<em>Nihon<\/em>\u201d (\u65e5\u672c), translating to \u201c<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">origin of the sun<\/span>\u201d (hence\u00a0<em>Land of the Rising Sun<\/em>), with the formal name \u201c<em>Nippon-\/Nihon-koku<\/em>\u201d (\u65e5\u672c\u56fd) translating to \u201cState of Japan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>2. The governmental form of Japan is a constitutional monarchy, with Emperor Akihito holding the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u201cChrysanthemum Throne\u201d<\/span>\u00a0and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe holding most governing powers<\/p>\n<p>3. Japan is a\u00a0<em>stratovolcanic archipelago<\/em>\u00a0consisting of a total of\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">6852 islands<\/span><\/p>\n<p>4. Japan and Russia are in a dispute over the Kuril Islands &#8211; the reason why both countries have\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not yet signed a peace treaty<\/span>\u00a0to end World War II.<\/p>\n<p>5. The year count in Japan is currently either \u201c2016 A.D.\u201d or \u201c<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">28 Heisei<\/span>\u201d, the 28th\u00a0year of the Heisei dynasty, which was established in \u201c1988 A.D.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6. Under the rule of the feudal rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate, total isolation of the country (\u201csakoku\u201d) was established in 1639, which only ended forcibly more than\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">two centuries<\/span>\u00a0later<\/p>\n<p>7. Japanese people have the highest average life expectancy in the world, with currently more than 50,000 being over\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">100 years old<\/span><\/p>\n<p>8. \u201cKong\u014d Gumi Co. Ltd\u201d was a Japanese construction company which has operated from 578 to 2006 (<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1428 years<\/span>) \u2013 considered to be the oldest and longest-operating company in the world<\/p>\n<p>9.
