Cognate: Finding your Ikigai

On Friday,  18th May  a few members of our class and I boarded our flight to our second experience abroad. We were heading to the incredible city of Oslo for our one-week module ‘Organisational Behaviour, CSR & Business Ethics’ at the BI Norwegian Business School. The city received us with an amazing 26º degrees weather, incredibly friendly people and endless sunshine. After this heartwarming welcoming the first thing that came to our minds was: “Let’s try traditional Norwegian food” , and of course we were not disappointed. Cafe Skansen is a beautiful traditional restaurant, located at the Radhusgata, in the city centre and just a few steps away from the port area. There, we had the opportunity to try a fantastic grilled Norwegian salmon with cucumber salad and potatoes.

During our full-time MBA module week abroad, we had the opportunity to discuss very relevant topics related to Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility and Organizational Behavior. All discussions and class topics were based on real life cases from recognized companies such as the “Domino’s Pizza Prank”, were we could analyze how the company dealt with this media scandal.  But please don’t think we were restricted to only academic lectures in a classroom. NOT AT ALL! As a matter of fact, we attended two compelling company visits, from two different industries. The first one was at the Oslo Stock Exchange where we discussed how different stock markets around the world approach the sustainable stock exchange, reporting and green bonds topics?. The next day, we enjoyed a visit at the Nordic Choice Hotel- The Thief where we presented interesting cases about hotel chains and their approach on Corporate Social Responsibility and their specific initiatives. We enjoyed amazing presentations from our classmates and all of this was of course followed by an amazing lunch.

Apart from the academic part there was also time for fun. Our beloved FS staff team with the help of the BI representative Ellen Heggelund organised great surprises for us. These included: a welcome dinner at Louise Restaurant & Bar at the Aker Brygge port area on Monday, a visit to the Oslo Opera on Thursday, and an incredible closure dinner at the Ostmarkseteren restaurant. This last one was an astonishing place outside Oslo, surrounded by nature, a lake, where we could again enjoy from a delicious variety of traditional dishes on Friday evening. On Saturday, we enjoyed a day tour around the city including the very famous Viking Museum, Vigeland Park, visit to the Holmenkollen Ski Tower, and lake swimming for those brave ones who dared to jump in the cold water at Hadeland.

From our side, we also decided to explore the city in our free time and to enjoy the weather. The boat trip around the Oslo Fjords was fantastic, as it was not a regular motor boat, but you had the feeling of travelling on board of a pirate ship. We also took a walk around the peer enjoying nice cafes and restaurants, followed by a view of the city from the Akershus Fortress. I can only say about Oslo, that it is a charming, colorful city filled with lovely and friendly people, willing to always help, guide you and even recommend you the best places to go, during your stay. I have no doubt I will be back. Takk og se deg snart!
