How the Master in Applied Data Science helped me advance my career

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration from Goethe University Frankfurt, I decided to pursue my master’s degree at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. I believe that the Master of Science in Finance programme offers an attractive environment for ambitious students to become the best version of themselves and start a successful career.

Lectures at Frankfurt School

The lectures at Frankfurt School are interactive and problem oriented. The classrooms are designed in a semi-circle amphitheatre style and create the perfect environment to discuss business problems with the professor and your fellow classmates. We usually have lots of deliverables during the semester (e.g. valuations for Corporate Finance, Monte-Carlo Simulation for Risk Management, presentation of an academic article etc.). On the one hand, the workload can be quite challenging – especially when you also work during your studies (like I do). But on the other hand, these deliverables really make you understand the content. If you want to understand the application of concepts and enjoy interactive learning, Frankfurt School will serve you well.

Life at Frankfurt School

I really enjoy the atmosphere on campus. You literally can’t stroll around on the campus without meeting friends. Through lectures, events and initiatives you’ll get to know many ambitious and open-minded people. There are currently 33 student initiatives ranging from social purposes, cultural interests and sport clubs to initiatives focused on academic and personal development. I’m involved as a department head at Frankfurt School Student Consulting and what we’ve managed to achieve during the last months is impressive. I also enjoyed events from FS Economy & Politics (speeches of Friedrich Merz, Peer Steinbrück, Volker Bouffier) and visited FS Coding a few times. Life at Frankfurt School is definitely one of the things I value the most.

Environment in the MoF programme

Students in the Master of Finance programme have quite diverse backgrounds. In our cohort we’ve got economics and business students as well as mathematicians and computer scientists. Many students already gathered valuable work experience, some with a cooperative study programme. This environment leads to exciting lectures and productive group work. It was easy to find people with similar interest and make friends during the kick-off events. The students here are always motivated to have a few beers in the city or watch a football game. This winter I went skiing in Austria with two fellow classmates. As an example for the great composition of our cohort: one holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and the other one a Bachelor in Economics and Business Administration from the University of St. Gallen. I experienced the whole atmosphere in the MoF programme as friendly and most classmates are always happy to help and share their learning materials.

Opportunities and career paths

Some of my friends want to pursue a career in investment banking, others in asset management, others founded their own companies and I’m personally interested in consulting. Frankfurt School invites companies from all industries to our career fair and the amount of workshops and events offered during each semester is huge. To give a few examples: Friends interested in M&A or Capital Markets participated in workshops with JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, Barclays and Citi. Friends interested in Asset Management visited Blackrock or Deutsche Bank and I attended events with Bain, Roland Berger, Accenture and zeb. The Frankfurt School Master of Finance programme is an excellent foundation for a wide range of careers. I am convinced that you can make the next step at FS, whatever that might be.

When you look at the European (or worldwide) landscape of master’s degrees there are many great opportunities. In the end you are going to be the decisive factor, there is more than one good university and many different paths can lead to success and self-fulfilment. However, I’m really satisfied with my choice and can definitely recommend Frankfurt School and the Master of Finance programme. Choose FS, become a part of the FS family and never leave again.

All the best and hopefully see you around soon,

Lars
