How the Master in Applied Data Science helped me advance my career

If you are interested in studying the Master in Applied Data Science, but still need some more information about the programme, you have come to the right place. I am here to give you insights in what motivated me to apply for this programme, what my expectations were and my experience of the first semester.

Theory vs Practice

The Frankfurt School Master in Applied Data Science programme is unique in that it has a strong focus on teaching and building technical skills. In comparison to typical Business Analytics programmes, we dive much deeper into cool IT topics such as machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence. In addition, we have a strong practical focus. We have already had several smaller and one big data science project in our first semester! This early-on practical experience is a very rich learning experience. On the one hand you experience the thrill of a working code early on, and on the other hand you can learn from your mistakes and how to improve for next time

No experience needed

You have a much better basis of information to make your decision. Let me elaborate: As part of the first Master in Applied Data Science cohort, I did not have any experiences of previous students to rely on and aid me in making my decision. I had to rely on the word of the Frankfurt School, that this programme would be a success.

The risk paid off

Even though choosing the Master in Applied Data Science programme was linked to some uncertainty, and thus was a risk for me. I now get to enjoy the benefits of taking this risk. The experienced teachers and teaching excellence of Frankfurt School and the resources available to push a new programme to the degree it requires, can be felt in the quality of the classes and extracurricular activities. The newly built Frankfurt School AI Lab and the Blockchain Centre offer us opportunities to engage with Data Science topics in a professional environment outside of the classroom.

A diverse class

Another big benefit of the Master in Applied Data Science programme is its small size. Our cohort consists of 15 young women and men from all over the world with surprisingly different backgrounds, experiences and expertise. Being part of this colourful group is an incredibly enriching experience. If you want to learn more about how my fellow students have experienced the programme, you can watch this video. Besides learning together and from one another, there are plenty of other activities to be pursued at Frankfurt School. Whether you want to compete in one of the sports teams such as FS Soccer, have heated discussions in FS Speech & Debate or let your creativity run free in FS Arts, Frankfurt School has a lot to offer. Since October 2018, Frankfurt School even has its own gym with a supporting app and fitness classes.

Equal opportunities

I have some last advice for future Master in Applied Data Science students: Even if you are not from an IT background, do not be afraid to apply. The programme is designed in such a way, that students with no coding experience have a fair chance to catch up in the first semester. So take the risk and prepare for the future, which is data!
