I was living in Portugal working as an emergency physician when I applied for the International Healthcare Management MBA program.

I had moved from Colombia to Portugal 8 years earlier as I was looking for a change in my career. I wanted to move from practicing medicine into a managerial position in Europe. I thought an MBA would help me make this step.

Choosing an international MBA

I was looking at Masters programs in Lisbon but they were very focused on domestic business in Portugal, rather than international business. It was not enough for what I was looking for. I wanted to see the world and have a chance to see what is happening in healthcare internationally. Now after graduation (I graduated in May 2019), I can say the IHM MBA was exactly what I thought it would be.

I have plenty of memorable moments that I can take with me from the International Healthcare MBA. Every single module was an amazing experience on its own. Since we were such an international and diverse group of people with different nationalities, backgrounds, cultures, traditions and religions, it was really interesting and challenging to work in different teams and to perform all the activities and assignments.

The dynamic and diversity of the peers in the class has offered a lot of room for interaction and discussions.

The residential modules offered me deep insights that were important to be able to better understand the international healthcare industry. The site visits during the modules, lectures, first hand stories, expert talks, live case studies and interaction with my international and diverse colleagues have helped me to broaden my knowledge about:

  • Various opportunities and challenges within individual systems
  • International healthcare systems
  • Different approaches for various international and intercultural issues

Looking back on the IHM

The MBA has expanded my knowledge into the complex world of healthcare systems. I was able to learn and experience the different healthcare system models implemented in the world. I have learned many new skills in the MBA, especially a lot about team dynamics how to be more of a team player and how to communicate more effectively.

From a management perspective, I have a better view of what a good manager is, and the factors I need to consider when making a decision. Many more doors are now open for me. I have a project in the works that I am excited about as it  will put me in a managerial position, allowing me to step away from my clinical work.

I would tell anyone that the IHM MBA is a life changing experience that will broaden your international perspective and improve your management skills.
