From Budapest to Frankfurt: My Part-Time MBA Experience Abroad

I’ve been contemplating an MBA for years and at the start of 2022, I finally made up my mind to apply for a program. I had two important factors in mind: I wanted to keep working and pursue a part-time program, and I was also looking for an international learning experience outside of Hungary, my home country. This meant looking at schools easily accessible from Budapest.

MBA: Not just a degree but a turning point in your career

The value of an MBA extends well beyond the classroom. It represents a transformative journey that shapes you into a versatile, forward-thinking leader capable of making a significant impact in your field. By pushing the boundaries of your capabilities and expanding your network, an MBA opens doors to opportunities you might never have imagined.

Summing up my MBA experience was surprisingly not as easy as I had envisaged, and every attempt to write this post was met with writer’s block. I reckon it is because my personal experience during the programme has not exactly been typical, from the decision to pursue an MBA to the entire application process.

For me, the essence of our MBA is to equip graduates with a holistic understanding of business and leadership skills to lead successful teams and be the driver of change in whatever industry and role they choose. It is an enormous privilege as I get to shape the learning and career journeys of the leaders of tomorrow.

Even though a part-time study is hard work, I am also pleased exactly for that reason: The hard work already pays off, and I can see daily clearer the benefits an MBA will bring in my personal and professional development.

Studying the Part-time MBA programme at FS was an action-packed experience offering a breadth of current business knowledge and real-world applications. It’s an incredible time to build your professional self and connect with those you can support and, of course, who can also support you. In summer 2018, we had our international module at CEIBS and I fell in love with Shanghai. It goes without saying that the city is infinite in many aspects, such as entrepreneurial spirit, ambition, opportunities, chaos, order, glamour and simplicity. Shanghai moves between and beyond its limits.

Between my parents relocating for work and me for both my studies and work, I had moved nine times until I finally settled in Frankfurt. With that "semi-nomadic" lifestyle, feeling like you belong somewhere didn’t necessarily come easy.

Why I chose the part-time MBA at Frankfurt School

Had you asked me a year ago, whether I would ever apply for a Master’s degree, I would have said no. Pursuing a career in sales, I felt work experience, soft skills and attitude were way more important than formal education. Having already completed my Bachelor’s in Business Informatics at Frankfurt School, I felt fully equipped for the professional challenges ahead of me.

My experience in choosing between the three options for my master’s thesis

Oftentimes, our job depends on the job of others and it is the co-working situation that I actually enjoy in my daily work since I truly believe there is something to learn from everyone. Consequently, I started looking for co-workers to write the master’s thesis in a group.

I always expected applicants for an MBA to require at least a Bachelor’s degree to be able to pursue an MBA programme, but I was proven wrong. Until then, I had accomplished a vocational training as a paralegal and four years of work experience in an international law firm in Frankfurt.
