How to navigate life in Frankfurt as a master's student: Tips and tricks

I decided to go for a Master’s degree with a major in Finance, as I thought this would be a great add-on to my Bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on Finance. Additionally, I already did my Bachelor’s in a dual degree program at a major German bank, which is why I also had practical experience in the financial industry.

Looking for a Master Programme

While I was looking for an opportunity to pursue my Master of Finance (MoF) in Germany, I quickly came across the offering of Frankfurt School. I had heard about Frankfurt School before, as major German newspapers (such as Handelsblatt or FAZ) and several TV channels often refer to some of the professors. Additionally, I saw Frankfurt School was performing very well in several rankings.

Another important argument for choosing the MoF at Frankfurt School was the unique 3-Day-Model. It allows me to combine working and studying in an integrated model. The combination of practical and theoretical experience can often be very helpful. On the one hand, I am able to apply my theoretical knowledge at work and directly test some of the concepts in action. This is very useful in understanding the theories. On the other hand, I can contribute to class discussions and group assignments with my work experience. This often turned out to be very helpful for well-structured and successful results.

Advice for Prospective Students

If you are also planning to work alongside your studies at Frankfurt School, you have to bear several things in mind. But if you keep track of them, studying at Frankfurt School will definitely be a great benefit for you.

From time to time, especially when it comes to exams or deadlines for group assignments, studying can be time-consuming. Nevertheless, you should be aware that you also have an obligation towards your employer. Therefore, my advice in this regard would be that you should be prepared early-on to handle a few challenging weeks during the semester.

Regarding the things that will boost your personal development, studying at Frankfurt School is very enriching. The international environment allows for interaction with students from all over the world. You will learn a lot about different cultures and how people from these cultures think and work. Thus, you should definitely make use of that to improve your intercultural competence. This will be a great benefit for your future career.

Finally and most importantly, you should be flexible and open-minded to try something new during the course of your studies. In class, you will get to know a wide range of topics related to Finance and if you want to, you can easily gain experience about how it is working in those areas. Many firms in Frankfurt offer great internship and working student positions. You can ask the Career Services department at Frankfurt School about them or get to know the employers yourself during company presentations and case studies that are offered nearly every day online or on campus.
