Model United Nations is an academic competition for students simulating the work of the United Nations in various countries. Since 1927, thousands of students have been travelling to the conferences of MUN. Last year, 6500 students from 440 universities and colleges came to New York City in order to debate about relevant global issues.
The participants are known as delegates and are split into 21 UN committees. In every committee, there are three issues which need to be prepared and will be discussed by the delegates.
This year, Frankfurt School is representing China in various committees and additionally USA in the Security Council. This makes our delegation the biggest at the upcoming conference in New York. Therefore, 40 FS students will be able to participate at this year’s National Model United Nations in New York.
The Kick-Off event on September 14th was the first meeting for everyone interested in politics and international relations at our university. Within one hour, the heads of the initiative informed and motivated the students to become a part of the new delegation of FS Model United Nations in 2017.
The next step was participating at one of the mock sessions. We got an insight into all the rules of MUN by discussing one of three selected issues. All students were split into groups of imaginary countries such as Glitzerland and Virginia Islands. This was a fun and easy way to get to know all of the rules and procedures of a real MUN conference.
In order to form the final delegation for New York, a workshop took place in Wiesbaden. Over 85 FS students registered. The next two days we spent discussing important issues and tried to find solutions by cooperating with other delegations from different countries. Finally, the resolution papers were presented which included our elaborated operating clauses to solve the stated problems such as the improvement of global transportation.
Afterwards, the students were asked to write a final application in order to illustrate their personal motivation to participate in New York. Shortly after submitting the application, 40 students were selected to be a part of the delegation of Frankfurt School.
In the next few weeks, we will prepare our performance at MUN by attending different meetings and workshops which are especially focussed on China and its structures.
An important part of the preparation for New York will be the writing of the Position Papers. Every committee has to write a paper representing the relevant views of your assigned country on the topics which will be discussed at the conference.
I´m really looking forward to an exciting time with my fellow student in New York!
FS MUN would like to thank Frankfurt School Alumi e.V. for their generous support of the Initiative this year, but also the years before. Each year, they sponsor scholarships to help students of FS to finance the trip to New York and become better speakers, negotiators and students.
