I am doing a PhD in Accounting at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg and currently, I am visiting the accounting department of Frankfurt School for five months as part of the TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency’s staff rotation. My choice to visit Frankfurt School was affirmed by their structured coursework programme that provides students with methodological skills as well as with an in-depth knowledge of economics, finance, and accounting. I would encourage students to visit Frankfurt School, as my time here is helping me expand my research network as well as significantly improve my dissertation projects.

Weekly discussions about research

The openness of the faculty and fellow students offers the uncomplicated possibility to discuss research ideas and receive suggestions for further research. I like that students are encouraged to use this possibility for feedback from early on. Besides the exchange within the faculty, the weekly research seminars with established academics in the field of accounting provide excellent discussions and additional input for my own research. Regarding this, the opportunity for students to talk to the speakers in private (over lunch) after the research seminars is a highlight. Doctoral students are international, which gives the opportunity to exchange various points of view. In general, the academic environment is great, wherever you go, the library, the restaurant or to lounges, people are doing or talking about research.

Excellent research environment at FS

The structured courses at Frankfurt School, which was one reason to visit, are characterized by small groups, which allow for in-depth, interactive discussions with the professor and time for individual scientific supervision. Office doors are always open if you feel the need to also discuss topics after the courses. Besides providing courses, Frankfurt School offers an excellent environment to conduct research. The campus is state-of-the-art and closely connected to the city. The “finance lab” offers access to all major databases such as Bloomberg, Refinitv, WRDS, FactSet etc. and therefore does not limit your ability to pursue your research interest. With its diverse and renowned faculty and student body, Frankfurt School is the right place to develop my dissertation further.

Are you interested in doing research?

I received a lot support in making the visit possible. I am grateful to visit Frankfurt School and especially for the valuable feedback and learned skills that will improve my further research.
