Located in the heart of one of the world’s largest financial centres, Frankfurt am Main, it is an obvious choice to start a career in the financial industry. But aside from my residence, I have always been enthusiastic about economic and financial contexts. After completing my bachelor’s degree, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the financial industry. However, I also knew I needed to deepen my knowledge in this area to participate best in the international economy.
The Master of Finance programme at Frankfurt School is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of financial markets, institutions and instruments and the skills needed to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic industry. One of the unique features of the Master of Finance programme is its flexibility. Students can choose from various concentrations, including Corporate Finance, Capital Markets and Risk Management. This allows you to tailor your studies to your interests and career goals.
In the financial industry, there are many different areas, but my greatest interest lies in the field of corporate finance. Accordingly, I have also chosen this concentration for my studies. I quickly became aware of the benefits of applying what was learned in theory into practice. The 3-day model allows students to attend classes on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. This means you can work during the week and still attend classes on weekends. It’s a great way to fit your studies around your work schedule and make the most of your time.
I first encountered corporate banking at a networking event. I immediately realised that corporate banking perfectly fits my skills and interests. I seized this opportunity and started working as a working student in corporate banking. Being a working student can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. As a working student in corporate banking, a typical day for me would likely start with checking emails and prioritising tasks for the day ahead. Corporate banking involves working with corporate clients, analysing financial statements, conducting research and developing financial solutions to meet the client’s needs. Therefore, a significant portion of the day would involve assisting bankers in managing internal aspects of existing client relationships. This could include gathering client information, preparing materials for client meetings and ensuring that all internal processes and procedures are followed.
Furthermore, I also help with industry and credit analysis, which could involve reviewing financial statements and supporting the credit approval and documentation process. In summary, a typical day as a corporate banking working student would involve a wide range of tasks, from assisting with client relationships and financial analysis to coordinating with different teams and networking with industry leaders.
Working alongside your studies in corporate finance can be incredibly beneficial. It allows you to gain real-world experience while also learning about the industry from an academic perspective. This can give you a competitive edge when applying for jobs after graduation, as you’ll have a better understanding of the industry and the skills needed to succeed.
My advice to students who want to choose this field is to be proactive and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Attend networking events and seek out internships or part-time work in the industry. In conclusion, studying corporate finance at Frankfurt School while working in the banking industry has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s given me the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the industry, and I am confident that I can take on a challenging role in corporate banking.
