If you are considering going abroad, you should probably just sign up and go. It may seem scary but you will have no regrets. I can say that for sure.
Although I am working part-time alongside my Master in Management at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, I decided to take advantage of the wide selection of partner universities that FS offers. I decided on National University San Diego.
Why? Well, California is always a good idea.
I was so happy when FS gave me the OK for this adventure. There is a lot of paperwork when it comes to getting a student visa for the United States but the support from both FS (a big thank you to Lisa Ronneburger) and National University was great. I also had a lot of support when it came to finding the right courses, housing and tips for everyday life at National University.
Nerves crept it as I waited for my flight and it suddenly dawned on me that I was going to live in a different continent where I didn’t know anyone at all. In hindsight, I should have felt excited more than anything because I was about to have the experience of a lifetime! I had the best roommates, accommodation near the beach and the opportunity to meet amazing new people. I can definitely recommend that you do the semester abroad on your own; it may seem scary at first, but I am telling you, you won’t regret it.
I studied “Global Business” and “Advanced Studies in Organizational Behavior”, which I chose from a wide range of courses offered by National University. You have one course per month, allowing you to focus on one topic at a time, and classes take place two times a week for five hours in the morning or in the evening. This gave me plenty of time to complete assignments in my own time as well as socialize and meet new people. Honestly, who wants to constantly have their head in the books whilst studying abroad anyway? The workload was manageable and it was very interesting to examine topics from an American point of view, especially as cars are always used as a point of reference when discussing hypothetical situations J
Of course, the primary reason that I went to San Diego was to study, but I fell in love with the city itself and couldn’t recommend it enough! Living by the beach was an amazing experience – I still think about the boardwalk, the sunsets and the food, strongly influenced by the Mexican kitchen. It was nice to be immersed into the Californian culture, where everyone takes it easy and has a relaxed approach to life. I have managed to bring a bit of this culture back to Frankfurt with me, which makes a huge difference when you live in a busy city.
