In 2020, I started my Part-time MBA studies at Frankfurt School. Diverse student profiles and practical teaching methods have shown to be great added values. During my Part-time MBA studies, I have been able to broaden my skills and further leverage the advantage of the FS network in the financial industry. Ambition, determination and the support of FS Career Services have encouraged me to start a new job in investment banking during my studies.

FS Career Services – Advisory, Support and Success Factor

Frankfurt School has an excellent network in the financial industry, especially in Frankfurt, one of the largest banking hubs in Europe. This positioning offers excellent opportunities to join the largest investment banks in Europe. So, Frankfurt School organises an annual FS Career Day, where interested banks, consulting firms and international companies are looking for potential candidates. I realised that this would be a good opportunity to further combine my previous professional experience, studies and interests. To prepare for this, I made use of FS Career Services, a specialised team around career counselling.

The FS Career Services team acted as a sparring partner and supported me with finalising my strategic career goals. Thereby, we have discussed my professional background, career interests and plans. Due to the very individual assistance, great expertise of the team and network in the financial industry, each conversation shed further light on my future steps. For example, we have analysed existing skills and competencies and matched them with possible companies and vacancies. As a next step, we have created and formulated my CV and cover letter. In that way, the FS Career Services team acted very practically and made suggestions for optimising them, which I took advantage of.

By having a professional CV and cover letter, greater light on possible companies and jobs that matched my career goals, I was looking forward to the FS Career Day.

The FS Career Days

Due to Covid, the FS Career Day took place virtually for the first time. Initial doubts about limited networking opportunities were disproved during the first career panels, round tables and coffee chats. The possibility to directly talk to the representatives of the respective banks/companies offered a great chance to get insights into the daily work. It was also easy to get in touch with companies at their virtual booth via Zoom.

In the run-up to the FS Career Day, interested students could add their CV to their digital profile. Furthermore, it was possible to register in advance for company presentations and to reserve a chat. By selecting several banks or companies, students were able to draw attention to themselves and, with a bit of luck, were given exclusive interviews, which later led to further interviews at companies or banks. So, I had the chance to have a first interview for a vacant position with Barclays. This initial contact led to further interviews and a career change.

From Applicant to Representative

Three months later, I started at Barclays in investment banking, focusing on the interest rate, foreign currency and inflation hedging. Frankfurt School’s concept and support of career planning offer a good value addition. I recommend everyone looking for a career change or the first entry into professional life to have a conversation with the FS Career Services team and participate in the FS Career Days. As an FS alumnus myself, I was pleased to attend the FS Career Day as a representative for Barclays in 2021 and interact with interested students. Seeing both sides, as an applicant and a representative, showed me how well-organised the Frankfurt School’s concept is. I am already looking forward to the interesting conversations at the 14th FS Career Day, on 8th and 9th of November 2022, whether virtually or in person.
