From engineer to asset manager: my career change and the value of mentoring

Looking back on my time at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, I can confidently say that the education I received there laid a solid foundation for the diverse and dynamic career I have built over the past decade. My academic journey, which included a Master in Management and a Bachelor of Science in Management, Philosophy & Economics, has been instrumental in both my professional development and entrepreneurial ventures.

Mastering Core Principles in Management and Economics
During my bachelor’s degree, I was introduced to core principles of management, economics, and investment strategies. These subjects gave me a deep understanding of how the economy works, how businesses operate, and how investments can drive long-term success. These foundational skills have proven invaluable in my roles as a management consultant and project manager in the banking sector, where I have been responsible for strategic decisions and managing complex projects with both project and personnel responsibilities.

The Philosophical Aspect of Business

One aspect of my education that set me apart from many peers was the inclusion of philosophy in my studies. While the philosophical elements of the programme might initially seem unrelated to business, they actually provided me with a crucial skill set: the ability to think critically and approach problems from multiple perspectives. Philosophy taught me to challenge assumptions, explore thought experiments, and make decisions without bias. This mindset has served me well, not only in consulting but also as I ventured into real estate and built a property business alongside my consulting career. The ability to view opportunities from different angles has been crucial when evaluating investment projects or solving complex business challenges.

Real Estate Investment: From Student to Entrepreneur

One of the most beneficial aspects of my time at Frankfurt School was the access to a network of highly motivated, like-minded individuals and mentors. While I was already involved in consulting during my master’s studies, the opportunities to connect with industry professionals and peers were invaluable in shaping my professional path. It was through this network that I gained insights into the world of real estate investing. In fact, it was during my studies that I began investing in real estate, which eventually led to the creation of my own property business with a partner.

Embracing Entrepreneurship and Real Estate at FS

Although there was no specific focus on entrepreneurship or real estate investment during my time at the university, I am pleased to see that Frankfurt School now offers dedicated programmes and support for students interested in these fields. I encourage current students to take full advantage of these resources, as they are perfectly positioned to help aspiring entrepreneurs succeed in today’s competitive landscape.

Transition to Tax Consulting: A New Chapter

After gaining significant experience in consulting and project management, I transitioned into tax consulting, specialising in tax strategies for real estate and investments. I was motivated to pursue this path further by my entrepreneurial experiences and my deep passion for real estate. In fact, I went on to complete my tax advisor exams, which have enabled me to help clients optimise their financial strategies, particularly in relation to real estate investments, wealth management, and business ventures.

The Advantage of Theory, Practice, and Innovation

Reflecting on my career, I realise how much the combination of theory, practical experience, and entrepreneurial spirit developed at Frankfurt School has shaped my professional life. My studies not only provided the technical knowledge I needed but also fostered a mindset that embraces innovation and continuous learning. Looking ahead, I am excited to continue leveraging the insights I gained from my time at Frankfurt School as I navigate new challenges and opportunities in my career.
