How to navigate life in Frankfurt as a master's student: Tips and tricks

On November 1, 2024, I experienced one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. Every year, the Municipal Representation of Foreigners (KAV) of the city of Frankfurt honors individuals with a migration background who have made outstanding achievements in education, science, and business. I received this award for my achievements in education. The ceremony took place in the historic Paulskirche in Frankfurt, a place of immense historical significance. I was one of 20 honorees, each with unique migration stories and remarkable accomplishments, and being recognized alongside them felt deeply humbling.

This recognition was even more meaningful to me because it was Frankfurt School of Finance & Management that nominated me. I am incredibly grateful to my university for believing in me.

My Journey from Iran to Germany

I received this award as a woman who left everything behind—my family, friends, career, and a familiar life—in pursuit of a better future. Guided by democratic ideals and the dream of a free and successful life, I arrived in Germany in September 2023, completely alone. Over the past year, I faced the challenges of migration while relying solely on my determination to build a new life.

Learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, studying full-time while working in the finance sector, and achieving excellent grades—all while preparing for another move to London for my exchange semester at London Business School—was far from easy. It meant spending many late nights studying in the library—so much so that my friends started joking that I practically live there!

An Inspiring Encounter: Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg

Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg is an Iranian woman who is the Deputy Mayor of Frankfurt. Nargess is a true symbol of strength, courage, and resilience. Imprisoned in Iran for her opposition to the Mullah regime, she endured unimaginable challenges, including giving birth to her daughter while in prison. Receiving the award from a woman of the same nationality, who shares the same vision of freedom and justice, made the moment even more meaningful.

Frankfurt: A City That Values Diversity

One of the things I admire most about Frankfurt is its international spirit. It is a city that thrives on diversity and appreciates the contributions of immigrants. Lord Mayor of Frankfurt, who could not attend the ceremony in person, shared this message with us that the city values our efforts and assured us that no contribution goes unseen. He encouraged us to continue making a difference and contribute to Frankfurt’s growth and success.

The Impact: More Than an Award

After the event, when my friends, fellow students, and community members heard about this recognition, I was overwhelmed by their support. I received so many warm hugs, smiles, and messages of congratulations. It touched me deeply to realize that what I had achieved resonated with others, especially with women and immigrants—two distinct groups who felt a strong connection to my journey.

To hear people say that this gave them hope meant the world to me. Seeing people feel inspired was the most rewarding part. I can’t ask for more than that. It’s moments like these that remind me of why I started this journey, and they make me feel that it was worth it. I feel nothing but gratitude for the small impact I could make.

A Night of Gratitude and Hope

The evening was made even more special by the presence of my mentors, friends, and family. I was fortunate to have Mr. Stiglietz, Ms. Werner, Mr. Jodjahn, and my loved ones by my side. The highlight of the night was receiving a book featuring the stories of all the honorees, including my own. Holding that book in my hands felt unreal—it was a tangible reminder of how far we can come.

Very Honest Final Words

I want to be very honest—I was lucky. As much as we like to believe life is about what we strive for and achieve, it’s also about being in the right place at the right time. Luck played its part in my journey, but so did the unwavering support of my family, friends, and Frankfurt School. Their belief in me enabled me to focus on pursuing my dreams. None of this would have been possible without them.

As I reflect on this incredible moment, I am reminded of the lyric, ‘But are we all lost stars, trying to light up the dark?’ This award is proof that even when life feels uncertain, our efforts to create light in the darkness may lead to something meaningful. I truly wish that one day I give back to the community that welcomed me and contribute toward a more just world.
