How to navigate life in Frankfurt as a master's student: Tips and tricks

I guess everybody can agree that starting a new chapter in your life is always (at least a bit) scary. For me this new chapter involved moving from a place near Bielefeld, the city that does not exist, to Frankfurt to start my Master of Finance journey at Frankfurt School.

How I applied for the Master of Finance programme

While researching for Finance Master programmes that suited me, I discovered the Master of Finance (MoF) programme at Frankfurt School. What attracted me the most about Frankfurt School was the three-day-study-model and the excellent education and its reputation. I decided to apply and I wanted to make sure that my application was perfect, so naturally, I had loads of questions and sent the Marketing & Recruitment team loads of e-Mails, firing away all of my questions, which they all answered very quickly.

Once I had clicked the “send” button in the online application portal, I had yet to take my GMAT exam. Shortly after Frankfurt School had received my test results, I was quickly offered an appointment for an interview via Zoom. My interviewer was very kind and I felt well accommodated. The interview apparently went better than I thought it did, and I was excited to be offered to study at Frankfurt School.

After that, I took care of the “busy stuff”: sending additional documents about health insurance and my Bachelor’s degree, and looking for accommodation in Frankfurt. Those days passed by quite quickly, and at the end of August came the scary part: moving to Frankfurt without knowing anyone there. But then Orientation Week came around and I met loads of new students, who were in a similar situation as me, making lots of new connections.

My first impression of orientation week at Frankfurt School

The most fun part of Orientation Week was definitely the Outdoor Campus day. I had no idea what to expect, but it was a fun day of teambuilding exercises and I also got to know students from other Master programmes. Moreover, the weather was great, so what could go wrong? During Orientation Week, so much stuff happened that it felt longer than just one week. Afterwards, classes started and I was really excited, especially since I was able to physically attend them on Campus. I must, however, also admit that it took me some time to get used to going to lectures again; I had not had one since January 2020.

After Orientation Week we also had the Community Life Fair where all the initiatives introduced themselves, and I decided to join the Company Analysis department of FS Sustainability to meet more people and do ESG research about companies. Additionally, I am currently working on founding a new initiative (stay tuned!) with a few people I met during August and September. All in all, I think I got a great start at Frankfurt School. My recommendation for everyone is to not take it too slow to get settled in, but to get stuck in the action directly and actively engage in the community next to your studies if you can spare the time.
