Trusting Experts – Part I: Should we be independent thinkers?

 The ideal of the independent thinker has been central to our intellectual culture. The great Enlightenment philosopher Immanuel Kant wrote that “Have courage to use your own reason!” could be called the motto of enlightenment. To fail to use one’s own reason was giving in to cowardice and laziness. Rather than taking responsibility for one’s life, one was relying on the instructions of some authority.

How to find a niche and build your own company

Building your own company is a challenging but rewarding process. It can be extremely difficult to stand out and succeed. That's why it is essential to identify a niche and create a unique business that caters to a specific audience. In this blog post, I will discuss the steps I took when starting my own business during my studies at FS.
I have had the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects, but my favourite by far has been Logic. In my studies, I have been introduced to a number of fascinating topics within the field, including fallacies, predicates and quantifiers and the calculus of natural deduction. I was drawn to this subject because of its potential to help me think more clearly and critically.

Working for the Student Council as an MPE student

Many FS students are very active members of FS student initiatives, so am I. This year, I was elected to the Frankfurt School’s Student Council as a School Representative, and like to share with you how my engagement at Frankfurt School´s Student Council positively affected my studies as an MPE student. Hopefully this inspires you to do extracurricular activites during your studies too.
What can I know? What does it mean to know anything at all? Or more radically, could it be that I am just dreaming or trapped in ‘the Matrix’? Traditionally, philosophical epistemology has dealt with questions such as these primarily from the perspective of the individual. Social epistemology, in turn, puts the ‘social’ into knowing.

Engineering concepts – Why language matters

Current political discourse teems with discussions about language. People get hot-headed about gender-neutral language, street names, what one is “still allowed to say,” and the limits of political correctness. Recently, the German state of Bavaria’s conservative government even went so far as to ban outright gender-neutral spellings in all legal and administrative state regulation, the justification being that such spellings would make official regulations harder to understand.

Are you excited about having chosen the Bachelor in Management, Philosophy & Economics as your undergraduate programme but are still not entirely sure what to expect? Fret not! I have put together some of my own insights and tips to help you hit the ground running!
When students arrive for their supervisions in philosophy, I can often tell that they feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Excitement, because they will now have the chance to discuss in great detail their own ideas, arguments and positions with me and just one other fellow student. Nervousness, because they know that the undivided focus of this next hour will be placed firmly on the persuasiveness of their own work, anticipating possible challenges to their arguments and wondering how well they will be able to parry them.

In the near future, we can expect such systems to be able to carry out more and more tasks all by themselves. Apart from self-driving cars, it is likely that we will encounter autonomous machines in many places: in warehouses, hospitals, banks, and on the battlefield.

Learning how to reason: Why we chose MPE

After having spent months researching where to find the best interdisciplinary programme (including several night shifts, obviously), what made the MPE stand out for us was the ‘M’ – and thus the Frankfurt School’s unique combination of economics and philosophy with management. Other degrees appeared to lack this component.
