In the past days, our international community received an unconventional folder at the mailbox. It was this huge yellow ballot with a lot of names on it. This is the “Musterstimmzettel” and is meant to help electors to allocate the votes for the upcoming election of the Foreign Advisory Council of Frankfurt am Main. Immigrants, foreigners, international students and anyone who is registered in Frankfurt for more than 6 weeks has the right to vote on this council independently of their nationality.

What it is?

The KAV is the Kommunale Ausländerinnen- und Ausländervertretung, i.e. the Foreigners’ Advisory Council of the City of Frankfurt am Main and is one of the most successful “integration parliaments” in Germany. It represents the interests of the foreign residents of the municipality.

The election to Foreign Advisory Council (Ausländerbeirat) is on 14th march,2021.

What does it do?

This council represents the foreign residents in Hessen, hence, it makes absolute sense especially for international students to take priority interest in it and vote. The Foreign Advisory Council provides the following help to the international students and to the community:

The Ausländerbeirat:

  • Represents the interests of the foreign population.
  • Is involved in decisions in local politics.
  • Provides recommendations and suggestions
  • Promotes integration without loss of cultural identity.
  • Against discrimination – for integration
  • Conducts antidiscrimination politics at the local level.
  • Advocates tolerance and civil courage.
  • Combats right wing extremism and racism.
  • Bridges migrants and associations with city administration and politics.
  • Advises migrants seeking help.
  • Lobbies for support for foreigners’ clubs and societies.
  • Works for improved opportunities in schools and other educational institutions.
  • Organizes political events and intercultural festivals.

Furthermore, everyone over the age of 18 can vote who have a registered address where you have been residing for > 6 weeks. You can find out who is up for election from your local Ausländerbeirat, brochures, the internet or from the sample ballot.

Where and how can I vote?

Firstly, from February 1, 2021, you will receive your election notification by mail mailed to you.

Secondly, on March 14, 2021, at a polling place near your residence. (the place of voting is indicated in the election notification) Take the election notification and an ID card with you.

Due to corona virus restrictions, you must wear a mask and bring your own pen to the voting place.

Thirdly, time for voting: (8:00 Uhr – 18:00 Uhr), i.e (8 AM – 6 PM) on 14th march,2021.
