Have you ever wanted to try your hand at solving real-life business problems?
Many prestigious business schools around the globe host what is called a ‘Business Game event’ for students craving for hands-on experience in problem-solving. As the Frankfurt School Business Game approaches, we would like to make a short introduction to the world of business games.
A Business Game is a student-led initiative which challenges students from all across the world to solve real-life business cases. Coming from different backgrounds, participants bring diverse perspectives to the case challenges presented by corporate partners. The business game tests the mettle of the participants on different aspects of business and showcases their creative, analytical and presentation skills.
The selected candidates are invited to the event. During the event, participants get to solve business cases in teams of four. The teams are randomly reassigned for every case challenge to exhibit their teamwork and leadership skills. Each team gets about 2-4 hours for every case to think out of the box and come up with practical and unique solutions. Thereafter, participants present their solutions to a jury of corporate partners and make an impression to the panel of corporate partners.
Participants have the opportunity to enjoy a unique experience of engaging in a case competition with students that have a different background and mindset – this is enspiring. Moreover, they benefit from the opportunity to network with corporate partners and broaden their future career prospects. By developing innovative solutions and working in diverse teams to solve real-world business problems, participants challenge themselves to think entrepreneurially and to apply theoretical knowledge in a professional context. Lastly, participants make lifetime memories and widen their network by interacting with other talented students across the world.
Bachelor and Master students with a background in both business and non-business, ranging from social science to medicine, are welcome to apply for a business game. This ensures diversity as heterogeneous teams create stronger dynamics in a group, leading to a higher degree of creativity and information processing.
A business game is not just a ‘game’. Corporate partners bring up a question closely related to their real business situation in order to have fresh insights. Hence, studying about corporate partners’ status quo or challenges that they are facing could provide a hint on understanding prospective case challenges.
In the end, it all comes down to how the team present their idea. Compelling storytelling is the key to win the heart of a panel. Practicing your presentation skills and preparing eye-catching presentation templates before-hand can be instrumental in the final pitch.
