It seems like only yesterday that I decided to step out of my comfort zone. It was the day I made the decision to submit my application to the Executive MBA (EMBA) programme offered by Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.
I won’t deny that my expectation of gaining entry into such an elite university was not very high. The fact that the application period had already passed made me feel even worse, so I decided to cease working on the application form. However, the next day, an email asking why I had stopped my application form from being sent arrived, encouraging me to go through with the process because I was a great addition to the cohort.
To my satisfaction, I was successfully admitted after what turned out to be a lengthy and challenging application procedure. That was, without a doubt, one of the most thrilling days of my whole life. But after that, anxiety and concern set in. How am I going to start the EMBA programme, considering I reside in Liverpool? Would I be able to afford the cost of my flights? Should I uproot my life and move to Frankfurt? As you could have imagined, hundreds upon thousands of questions came up.
As a skilled professional with over 16 years of experience in sales, pre-sales and the provision of end-to-end Software and Cloud solutions, I am currently employed as Director of Products Development. In this role, I am responsible for leading and managing the creation and expansion of a new business line that generates a profit. In addition, I also collaborate with business development teams from various companies on all facets of client development, including capture planning, proposal writing and business product strategy.
So why did I decide to enrol in the EMBA programme? At that time, I was motivated by a variety of factors, but I will focus on the most important ones here. As a professional, at some point in your career, you will face difficulties associated with the organisation you work for. The major challenges for me were the lack of any clear path forward to follow, the inability to gain crucial skills necessary for advancement and a seeming absence of consciousness.
Thus, I found myself in a very precarious situation, and as a result, I made the decision to take a chance and make an investment in both my knowledge and my future. There are times when the only option is to put everything on the line and try something new that no one else will.
After ten months, my perspective, expectations, knowledge, and opportunities have all undergone a complete transformation. Now I can see things from a different perspective, and I have always believed that the most effective method to boost one’s self-confidence is to increase one’s level of education.
This self-assurance enables me to concentrate not only on my advancement but also, and perhaps more importantly, on the accomplishment of my goals that will determine how I will see myself in the foreseeable future. If you put some effort into that, you will be able to realise all of the goals that you have set out for yourself.
If you believe that only CEOs can benefit from an Executive MBA programme, then let me inform you that you are mistaken in that assumption. As soon as I walked into the classroom for the first time, I realised that I was immediately surrounded by some of the most fascinating people anyone could possibly ask. Individuals who come from a variety of ethnicities, faiths, language groups, professional backgrounds, etc. The contributions and the benefits that may be gained from working with such a diverse group of people are truly astounding. It is impossible to fathom the number of responses or viewpoints that can be gleaned from a single question.
Every single one of them has the potential to provide you with motivation through the exchanges and conversations that you have with them. By collaborating with them on the same projects, these interactions have been amplified to an even higher degree. These individuals are not only your classmates in the EMBA programme but also potential friends and contacts in the future. I can say with complete sincerity that if I ever get the chance to employ them, I will do it without reservation.
To put it into the words of Warren Buffet: “Surround yourself with people that push you to do better. No drama or negativity. Just higher goals and higher motivation. Good times and positive energy. No jealousy or hate. Simply bridging out the absolute best in each other.”
